During a whirlwind dining excursion in downtown Lewes this summer, my fiancé and I happened upon Kindle, a tiny eatery located on Bank Street. We both were drawn in by the front sign that read, “Eat Drink Glow.”

The tiny restaurant was crowded, which was to be expected during the middle of the summer. But we somehow lucked out and snagged the last two open bar stools.

I ordered a red pear martini made with Absolut pears vodka, pear nectar, mango vodka and a touch of pomegranate juice. My fiancé has been on a gin kick lately, so he tried the Sloe Gin Fizz, made with Hayman’s London dry gin, sloe gin, apricot brandy and San Pellegrino Limonata.

As we sipped our tasty cocktails, we decided it was time for an appetizer. Like many beach restaurants, Kindle offers plenty of local and seasonal fare, which assures a fluctuation in the menu offerings (the restaurant released its fall menu in the beginning of September). We agreed to try the mussels, which are served tossed in a decadent broth of Chardonnay, shallots, leeks and parsley and a side of grilled bread. The mussels were extremely fresh and plump; our only complaint was there wasn’t enough bread to sop of up all of the luscious broth.

The menu is a mix of seasonal American fare infused with a touch of French cuisine. You can snack on a bowl of olives or a cheese and charcuterie plate while you decide on your entrée. Weekly dinner specials include $9 burgers on Wednesdays, filet mignon with all the trimmings and a glass of wine for $27 on Thursdays and Moule Frites for just $12 on Sundays.

While we both enjoyed conversing with our neighbors to our left and our right, we both agreed that Kindle was a bit cramped. But now that those pesky summer crowds are gone, it is the perfect opportunity to dine there. The restaurant does take reservations, too, but only for parties of six or more.

Kindle relocated from Paynter’s Mill in Milton to its current location in 2009 and is co-owned by Ian and Joanna Crandall and Matt and Ali DiSabatino. The couples also co-own Hall-Full in downtown Lewes.
