Libation of the Month: Strawberry Switchblade

Where to Find it: Widely available throughout the state, from Branmar Liquors in Brandywine Hundred to Outlet Liquors in Rehoboth.

Whether you’re at the pool, a picnic or a backyard barbecue, you can’t go wrong with Strawberry Switchblade. This refreshing hefeweizen from Aston, Pennsylvania–based 2SP Brewing Company is the perfect complement to a hot summer day. Although located over the border in Delco (Delaware County for those not in the know), 2SP is related to Two Stones Pub, which started in Newark.

Hefeweizen is a German-style wheat beer with fruity and spicy notes. Don’t let the cloudy appearance scare you. “Hefe” refers to the suspended yeast, and the opaqueness is part of the mystique.

The Switchblade is fermented at a high temperature to coax out banana flavors in the beer. Sip slowly and carefully to taste the clove notes that are characteristic of the style, and, of course, you can’t miss the strawberries, which are added at the end of fermentation for a sweet balance. The sweet strawberry flavor is most obvious on the nose, making this a subtly sweet and perfectly refreshing choice.

The hefeweizen is a light, thirst-quenching choice for a variety of summer foods, from fruit salad to sorbet, and the 5% ABV means you can pour a fresh glass for each summer course. While 2SP Brewing Company offers an impressive selection of craft beers all year round, Strawberry Switchblade is available only for the summer, so keep an eye out for it on your next trip to the taphouse or liquor store.
