With nominations open until March 31, the Drew Ostroski Award recognizes excellence in journalism and photography in Delaware.

Drew Ostroski was an award-winning journalist and passionate photographer who served as managing editor for Delaware Today for 17 years, more than half his illustrious journalism career. After his death in 2020, his family and friends created the Drew Ostroski Award, which recognizes excellence in Delaware journalism and photography.

Entries are now being accepted in the categories of Stories About Delaware, Humor Writing and Outdoor Photography. Stories must have been published in 2021. Photography need not have been published but should have been captured in 2021. Entries must be submitted by March 31, and those interested can submit their work through the website.

Winners receive a plaque and a cash award. Recipients are selected by an independent panel of judges, which has not been selected yet for this year.

“The idea is to grow this contest into a real celebration of journalism in Delaware, about Delaware, which is different than other local contests,” says Mark Nardone, a member of the Drew Ostroski Award committee and longtime Delaware Today editor and writer.

Ostroski worked for just about every Delaware media outlet over the course of his career. While he was born in Pennsylvania, he and his family moved to Lewes when he was young. He always considered himself a native Delawarean and was proud to tell Delaware stories. He was a 1985 graduate of Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes and a graduate of University of Delaware, where he majored in journalism.

Over the years, Ostroski was recognized with several awards. He is remembered for his catchy headline writing and his passion for local journalism.

The award was established in his honor in 2020. Winners for that year were recognized during a virtual ceremony in May 2021.
