What started in tragedy is transforming into triumph for brothers Charlie and Joseph Todd—and the local fitness world is taking notice.

In May 2011, the brothers were celebrating in Philly after Charlie, a promising football player for Ball State University and former sports star at Howard High School, had gained the attention of NFL scouts following a workout. But in the dark, a passing driver struck Charlie, sending him flying.

“He tried to get up,” Joseph recollects. “He was like, ‘Yo, I can’t even move.’”

The accident broke Charlie’s fibula and tibia and dashed his NFL dreams.

After surgery and intensive therapy, Charlie still felt restricted in his movements, so the brothers got to work designing a modified resistance-band harness that would allow Charlie to regain his strength and develop full range of motion.

“The harness consists of ankle braces that link to a sturdy but lightweight vest along with seven sets of elastic single-strand bands. They work by adding resistance to practically any exercise, from squats to weightlifting.”

The invention, which the Todds dubbed the Total Resistance, worked even better than they imagined. They knew they had to share it with the world. They soon opened up a gym in Wilmington and Middletown (trfitclubs.com) to showcase what their invention had to offer.

“Everyone that has come here consistently gets results when it’s all said and done,” Joseph Todd says.

Adds Charlie: “You can get in better shape than you were prior to start. And if you keep doing it, you can eventually get into the best shape of your life.”
